As the 2024 election campaign heats up, one influential figure has become a key player in spreading doubt about the integrity of the U.S. electoral process. Elon Musk, owner of the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), has been using his massive reach to amplify claims of election fraud, sowing mistrust among millions of Americans. A CBS News investigation has revealed that Musk’s posts have garnered nearly 3.3 billion views since January, making him one of the most influential voices in election-related discourse during the campaign.
Musk’s involvement in election misinformation has alarmed public officials who are working to protect confidence in the democratic process. At a pro-Trump rally in Philadelphia, Musk stoked fears by claiming, “Statistically there are some very strange things that happen that are statistically incredibly unlikely,” referring to debunked allegations against Dominion voting machines. His repeated amplification of these claims has positioned him as a major conduit for conspiracy theories.
Amplifying Conspiracies
Musk’s posts on X have furthered several misleading and false narratives, including a July post that claimed Democrats were deliberately allowing illegal immigrants to enter the country to vote in the election. The post, which received over 45 million views, mirrored a widely debunked conspiracy theory aimed at delegitimizing Democratic voters. According to a CBS News fact-checking analysis, 55% of Musk’s posts on election security contain false or misleading statements.
The analysis, supported by data from the International Center for Journalists and Convocation Research+Design, reviewed more than 48,000 of Musk’s posts over the last four years, with a specific focus on election administration. Of the 17,000 posts Musk made this year alone, 361 of them focused on alleged election fraud, each averaging nearly 9.3 million views.
Fears of Post-Election Chaos
Experts are sounding the alarm that Musk’s posts could have severe real-world consequences. David Becker, Executive Director of the Center for Election Innovation and Research, warned, “On election night, if Trump believes he’s losing, he is likely to spread massive amounts of disinformation about the existence of fraud.” Becker added, “I think we can say with near certainty, Elon Musk is going to take those comments and spread them out to hundreds of millions of people.”
Similarly, Mekela Panditharatne from the Brennan Center for Justice pointed out the dangers of Musk’s misinformation campaigns. “This is galvanizing unfounded fears and concerns about the election process,” she said, raising concerns about post-election challenges based on unfounded fraud claims.
Musk’s Political Shift
Musk’s engagement in political discourse is a recent development. Though historically disengaged from politics, he revealed in 2022 that he voted Republican for the first time. By 2024, he fully embraced Donald Trump’s candidacy, officially endorsing him for a second term and becoming one of his most prominent online advocates.
His support for Trump has been reflected in both his social media activity and financial contributions. Musk has reportedly donated more than $74 million to the America PAC, which supports Trump’s re-election campaign, and has shared the stage with Trump at rallies in battleground states like Arizona and Pennsylvania.
Escalating Attacks on Election Officials
Musk’s frequent posting about election security issues has led to direct confrontations with election officials. Recently, Musk falsely claimed that Michigan had more registered voters than eligible citizens. Michigan’s Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson quickly corrected him, clarifying that there are 7.2 million registered voters and 7.9 million eligible voters in the state. Benson’s response to Musk’s claim, “@elonmusk is spreading dangerous disinformation,” highlights the ongoing battle between tech magnates and public officials.
Benson later revealed that Musk’s post resulted in an uptick in threats directed at her office, forcing her to prioritize the safety of her children and executive assistant. “This is all happening when early voting is unfolding in Michigan,” she told CBS News. “While my team needs to be focused fully on making voting work properly, they are having to deal with this instead.”
Concerns About Far-Right Amplification
Research from Convocation Research+Design (CoRD) found that Musk’s interactions on X have increasingly aligned with far-right ideologies. Many of the accounts Musk engages with promote racist or xenophobic content, including the “great replacement theory,” a conspiracy alleging that White Americans are being replaced by immigrants. Musk has echoed this theory in his posts, such as one predicting that if Kamala Harris were to win the presidency, the Democrats would “import and legalize enough migrants to ensure a permanent one-party rule.”
Sam Smith, co-founder of CoRD, warned that Musk’s frequent interactions with far-right accounts could push more extreme content to his followers through the platform’s algorithms. “If Musk frequently engages with or amplifies far-right content, the platform’s algorithm may prioritize similar content for his followers, leading to unintended exposure to extreme viewpoints,” Smith said.
Election Night Concerns
Looking ahead to election night, experts are preparing for the potential fallout of Musk’s reach. Becker expressed deep concern about the ability of facts to penetrate the disinformation landscape. “The ability of the truth to reach citizens is going to be extremely limited,” he said, emphasizing the risk of disinformation being widely spread during and after the election.
As the 2024 election approaches, the role of tech platforms and influential figures like Elon Musk in shaping public opinion has never been more significant. With millions of followers and billions of views, Musk’s impact on election discourse will continue to be a focal point in the fight to safeguard democratic processes.
