Kamala & Liz Hit PA—Republicans Rattled!

In a major bipartisan push ahead of the 2024 presidential election, Vice President Kamala Harris and former Republican U.S. Representative Liz Cheney united in Pennsylvania on Monday to rally Republican and undecided voters. The unusual alliance highlighted the critical nature of the election as both women cast former President Donald Trump as a threat to democracy and national security.

During a moderated conversation in Chester County, Pennsylvania, Harris and Cheney began their three-state campaign tour, which also includes stops in Michigan and Wisconsin. The focus of their message was clear: Trump’s return to the presidency would be dangerous for the country, and Harris is the candidate to steer the nation towards stability.

“People around the world are watching,” Harris stated. “And sometimes, I do fret a bit about whether we, as Americans, truly understand how important we are to the world.”

This was Harris’s second appearance in Pennsylvania in two weeks as she continues to address Republican voters who remain hesitant about supporting Trump. The state, with its 19 crucial electoral votes, is a significant battleground. A CBS News poll in September showed Harris and Trump tied in Pennsylvania, each garnering 50% of voter support. Pennsylvania, a state that voted for Trump in 2016 and flipped to Biden in 2020, is once again at the center of the political battleground.

Harris made it clear that while she was part of the Biden administration, her presidency would mark a new chapter in American politics. She signaled that her leadership would bring fresh ideas to the table. “My presidency would not be a continuation of Biden’s. I would bring my own vision and goals to this country,” she emphasized. Harris also took direct aim at Trump, accusing him of using his presidency to sow division among Americans.

“I think people are exhausted with that, rightly,” Harris said, referring to Trump’s polarizing rhetoric. “And it does not lead to the strength of our nation to tell American people that we must be suspicious of one another, distrust one another.”

Former Congresswoman Liz Cheney, once a powerful figure in the Republican Party before her staunch opposition to Trump led to her political ousting, stood alongside Harris, underscoring her dedication to preserving constitutional values above partisan politics. Cheney, who supported Trump’s second impeachment after the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, made a forceful case against the former president.

Cheney described Trump as “totally erratic, completely unstable,” particularly when it comes to foreign policy, highlighting the risk of a Trump presidency. “Our adversaries know they can play Donald Trump,” Cheney warned. “They absolutely know they can play him, and we simply can’t afford to take that risk.”

The event was a rare and striking moment of unity between two women from opposing political backgrounds, bound by a shared concern over the future of American democracy. Cheney’s decision to endorse Harris stemmed from her belief that the Constitution must take precedence over political loyalty.

“The most conservative of all conservative principles is being faithful to the Constitution,” Cheney said. “You have to choose in this race between someone who has been faithful to the Constitution, and Donald Trump, who, it’s not just us predicting how he will act. We’ve watched what he did after the last election. We watched what he did on Jan. 6.”

Cheney’s warnings about the fragility of democracy came from her own experience working overseas. She stressed how easily a democracy can fall apart, a danger she sees as very real under another Trump presidency. “I know how quickly democracies can unravel,” she said. “And I know that, as Americans, we can become accustomed to thinking, ‘Well, we don’t have to worry about that here.’ But I tell you again, as someone who has seen firsthand how quickly it can happen, that is what is on the ballot.”

As the conversation wrapped up, Harris echoed a sentiment that many Americans have been yearning for—a return to a healthier political environment. “We need to be able to have these good, intense debates about issues that are grounded in fact,” Harris said. “Let’s start there.”

While the Harris-Cheney alliance is unprecedented, it remains to be seen how effective their joint appeal will be in swaying voters. Trump’s campaign, however, dismissed the event, with Pennsylvania spokesperson Kush Desai stating, “Showing off irrelevant former ‘Republicans’ of the past at campaign events doesn’t change the fact that Kamala Harris is running to extend her record of unlimited illegal immigration, rising prices and endless wars abroad by another four years.”

The stakes are high as both parties continue to rally support in the final weeks leading up to Election Day. For Harris and Cheney, the message was clear: the future of American democracy is on the line, and voters have a critical choice to make in November.
