In a much-anticipated event on Monday night, Elon Musk, the controversial owner of X (formerly Twitter), hosted former President Donald Trump for a conversation on the platform’s Spaces feature. Musk, who has openly supported Trump’s re-election efforts, emphasized that the discussion was intended to be “non-adversarial,” targeting undecided voters seeking to make an informed decision.
The event, however, got off to a rocky start. The experience was reminiscent of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’ troubled Twitter Spaces launch in May 2023, which was marked by technical failures. This time, eager listeners were greeted by a blank purple screen for over 40 minutes as they waited for the conversation to begin.
Musk quickly pointed to a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack as the cause of the delay. However, The Verge was quick to dispute this claim, noting that the rest of the platform was functioning normally, casting doubt on Musk’s explanation.
During the delay, billionaire Mark Pincus, another Trump supporter who identifies as a Democrat, tweeted in response to Musk’s DDoS claim, “Its Dems fighting to ‘save’ Democracy from two massive disrupters!” Musk simply replied, “Yeah.”
When the conversation finally got underway, it became clear that Musk had no intention of challenging Trump with hard-hitting questions. Instead, he offered broad, sometimes disjointed statements on topics like illegal immigration, urban crime, and the energy industry. Musk, who claimed to hold a “moderate” stance on issues like climate change, suggested that oil and gas executives are “saving civilization.”
Trump responded in his typical fashion, delivering long-winded monologues filled with familiar MAGA rhetoric. Musk’s contributions to these diatribes were minimal, often consisting of brief affirmations like “Yeah” or “I agree with you.” At times, he even complimented Trump’s points, reinforcing the perception that Musk was more of a cheerleader than a host.
Throughout the conversation, Musk repeatedly claimed to be politically neutral, though he also stated that he had been a left-leaning Democrat for most of his life. His main objective seemed clear: to sway undecided voters by painting Vice President Kamala Harris as a dangerous figure, labeling her as a “Marxist” and an “Israel-hating, open borders-advocating” threat. Moments later, they pivoted to portraying her as an inept, unaccomplished politician who would struggle in a conversation like the one they were having.
Musk and Trump appeared to share a mutual need for validation, with both men seemingly thirsty for praise throughout the discussion. It’s a feat that two of the most influential right-wing figures could speak for over two hours without offering anything of real substance. The conversation, filled with rhetoric-heavy and meme-like political discourse, was devoid of meaningful insights.
Fact-checking their claims, such as Trump’s assertion that the Democratic Republic of Congo is releasing prisoners to send them to the U.S. as migrants, or his claim that Kamala Harris is more left-wing than Senator Bernie Sanders, would be a futile exercise. These statements, along with Musk’s insistence that inflation can be curbed by simply empowering a “government efficiency commission” and deregulating industries, reveal a lack of understanding of the complexities of economics.
The conversation had brief moments where it could have become interesting. Trump, for instance, complained about the high energy consumption of artificial intelligence. This could have been an opportunity for Musk to defend his preferred technologies, but instead, he quickly changed the subject back to his “government efficiency commission.”
Another moment of potential engagement occurred when Trump discussed nuclear accidents making certain places uninhabitable for thousands of years. For the first time in the conversation, Musk pushed back, mentioning that he had visited Fukushima, the site of the 2011 nuclear disaster, and even eaten locally grown vegetables there. Trump, surprisingly, responded with a simple, “Yeah, yeah.”
The notion that Musk is courageous for hosting “civil” discussions like this one is a tired cliché. The conversation was neither groundbreaking nor informative. It was a dull, repetitive exchange that showcased two powerful men engaging in a mutual admiration fest, with little to offer in terms of substantial dialogue.
For those who enjoy displays of exaggerated masculinity, typical GOP fearmongering on crime and immigration, and superficial praise of free speech and civility, the Musk-Trump show was certainly a spectacle. But for anyone seeking thoughtful, engaging conversation, it fell woefully short.
